The 6-cylinder (Tower of Power) Mercury Mark 78A was rated at 70 + horsepower and was the the most powerful production outboard available from any manufacture in 1959. The "A" suffix denoted Keikhaeffer Mercury Corporation's 20th Anniversary (having been founded in 1939). 1959 was the last year Mercurys were available in different colors: This motor is finished in a teal green

6-cylinder Mercurys from 1957-61 were "Direct Reversing": Instead of having forward and neutral gears, the motor was reversed by momentarily stopping it and then re-starting the engine in the opposite rotation. The special single lever control facilitated this procedure. Though quirky, the concept was well designed and these motors are now sought-after collector's items
