The Mark 58 is the "holy grail" of classic Mercury runabout motors. It was the first year for the 44 cubic inch Super Thunderbolt powerhead and the last year for the "round top" cowling. These motors were rated at 45+ horsepower and incorporate 12 volt electric starting. The built-in alternator charges the boat's battery. With the fluted stainless wrap-around cowl, these motors define Mid-Century style. Nothing finishes off a classic runabout as much as a period-correct engine and the Mark 58 is the most desirable 1950's outboard, It was well designed, parts are plentiful and it will run circles around contemporary competitors

This motor is a great candidate for restoration. It is complete and has good compression. The prop and all castings are still in good shape with no cracks or breaks. To be show quality, the motor would have to be painted and detailed. Also, expect to do a thorough servicing including rebuilding the carburetors and fuel pump, replacing the impeller, fuel hoses, spark plugs and changing the gear case oil. (These items are all readily available from us and other sources)

This motor has a standard length shaft for boats with a 15" transom
