In order to provide accurate indications at all times, the fuel, temperature and oil pressure gauges need a regulated voltage source that is constant regardless of the car's battery charge state. The gauge voltage limiter converts the car's electrical system voltage (which can vary from 11 to 15 volts) to 9 volts with which it feeds the gauges for consistent readings at all times. if the fuel gauge, temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge (if so equipped) are all inoperative, a defective voltage limiter is usually the cause
